Solar panels in your business: which option to choose?

You can no longer ignore it: sustainable business is essential. Because of laws and regulations, but also because your customers and partners want it and you want to contribute to a better environment yourself.

Do you want to work towards a green business in the coming years? Then investing in solar panels is an attractive option. You can easily take more control of your energy and save on energy costs.

Find out what options there are and what they can do for you.

Why invest in solar panels?

An investment in solar panels will bring you many things:

  • You generate clean energy that you can use directly in your business. Such as for lighting, machinery and office equipment. Or for charging electric cars in your car park.
  • You reduce your energy costs for a long time. Solar panels have a lifespan of up to 25 years.
  • You are less dependent on energy suppliers and unpredictable energy tariffs.
  • You contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions.
  • You improve your company’s image. Customers are more likely to choose you, and other entrepreneurs like working with you.
  • You increase the value of the business premises. A building with solar panels is more attractive to potential tenants or buyers because it offers lower energy costs.
  • You improve the energy label of your premises. This can be beneficial when selling, letting, or negotiating the rent.

In addition, solar panels require little maintenance. An annual inspection and cleaning usually suffice.

What options have you got?

Generally speaking, you have four options for installing solar panels in your business.

1. Solar panels on the roof

You can opt for this if you own one or more buildings and if the roof is suitable. The type of roof (flat or sloping, for example) determines how best to install the panels. If you have your roof made more sustainable or renovated, you can choose to have solar panels integrated into the roof at the same time.

2. Ground mounted solar panels

This is an option if you have an outdoor area at one or more company buildings. You can then place the solar panels on a canopy in your car park, for example. You can even opt for moving panels that follow the sun and therefore produce extra energy. This does require more space and involves a bigger investment.

3. Solar panels on the facade

This is a good solution if you have limited roof space on your building(s). Facade panels exploit vertical space and give a building a modern look. Installation costs for these are relatively high, though.

4. Floating solar panels

Do you have a site with large areas of water near your company buildings? Then floating solar panels are an idea. Floating panels are very efficient due to the cooling effect of the water. However, the installation and maintenance costs are much higher than those of the other options.

Which form of solar panels is most suitable for your organisation depends on the available space, budget, aesthetic preferences and the amount of energy you want to generate.

Installing solar panels

You might think that installing solar panels is quite an undertaking. In some cases, it is, but certainly not always. If you choose solar panels on the roof or your car port, the installation is not a big deal. Of course, it depends on the size and complexity of the overall project and the supplier(s) you choose, but usually the whole process only takes a few weeks. Immediately after installation, the solar panels generate clean energy for your business. So you benefit immediately.
